Correctional Services to boost parolee monitoring with new tech

The Correctional Services Department says that it is in the process of acquiring new technology to enable its officers to effectively monitor parolees.

A parolee was taken back to prison after being found under the influence of alcohol at a tavern in Kariega in the Eastern Cape last night.

This happened during the visit of the department’s National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, to the area.

He went to check on those who had been sentenced for crimes related to gender-based violence as part of Women’s Month.

“We are in a process of acquiring an electronic monitoring system, where there are human rights issues that go with that, but these are systems that are used internationally, and these are not harmful systems because obviously the devices have to comply with SABS. They have to check for health and other types of hazards just to make sure that they are safe.”
