President of the Congress of the People (COPE)
The SABC has just learnt of the passing of the Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa Lekota.
Lekota died at the age of 77. His family has confirmed his death.
Lekota had stepped back from active politics last year to focus on his health. This led to the appointment of Teboho Loate as the interim leader of COPE.
Former high-ranking African National Congress (ANC) member, he served as the first Free State Premier from 1994 to 1996 and as Defence Minister from 1999 to 2008.

COPE has confirmed with deep sadness the passing of its President, following a period of illness.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the party says: “On behalf of the leadership, membership, and supporters of COPE, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lekota family and all South Africans who mourn this loss.”

The Lekota family has also requested privacy during this difficult time. The party has appealed to the public and the media to respect the family’s wishes, adding that it will provide regular updates to keep the nation informed.
