Contralesa calls for calm amid EC traditional leadership feud

The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) has called for calm amid a traditional leadership feud. A newly surfaced video shows AbaThembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, announcing that three Amakhosi are no longer recognised as chiefs — among them Mandla Mandela.

At the heart of the feud are the two men’s polar opposite views on the conflict in Gaza, with Mandela championing the cause of the Palestinians, while Dalindyebo has become an increasingly vocal supporter of Israel.

Dalindyebo also criticised EFF leader, Julius Malema and accused him of disrespect.

His remarks were made during a session at his residential complex in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

Contralesa President, Kgosi Larmeck Mokoena says Dalindyebo has no powers to expel the chiefs without following due process.

“Culturally, in terms of our constitution, you cannot just wake up one morning and say, ‘Kgosi Mokoena is no longer a Kgosi’. A traditional leader is identified by a royal family. The royal family, after identifying this traditional leader, they will now make all the necessary recommendations to government, where the premier will issue a certificate of recognition. Now, it is that very royal family who can remove the very same person who has been identified,” says Mokoena.
