“Consequence management will be applied to Mkhwanazi allegations”

Parliament has assured the public that it will apply consequence management in its handling of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s damning allegations.

Mkhwanazi has accused senior police officials including Minister Senzo Mchunu of being corrupt, having links with criminal syndicates and interfering in police operations.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has tasked three key oversight committees to urgently investigate the matter.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development Chairperson, Xola Nqola, says they will deliver their joint findings before the 23rd of July.

“We’ve been given a mandate to look into the matter in a form of a Joint Committee arrangement which is sitting next week and report to the National Assembly before the 23rd day of July 2025. So, the mandate is that let’s look into what has been alleged and advise Parliament on what form should it take. Because the matter at hand, if not as properly attended, may lead to unintended consequences. We assure South Africans that consequence management will definitely follow immediately after we have determined the shape of how Parliament must deal with the matter.”

Implicated individuals

Mkhwanazi specifically named Mchunu, Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Lieutenant General Sibiya, contractor Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, and Mchunu’s alleged associate, Brown Mogotsi.

He claimed their actions undermined investigations and amounted to defeating the ends of justice.

Mkhwanazi further alleged that crucial dockets were removed from the team, some implicating individuals with political and financial influence.
