The Office of the Chief Justice has raised concern over the water disruptions which have hindered the Constitutional Court’s ability to conduct in-court hearings since the first of this month.

The Office, however, says the exact cause of the ongoing irregular water supply challenge is not known at the moment.

In a statement, the Office says water leaks were also detected in the court which has also affected water supply in the building.

It adds that while the Court has a water tank installed for ablution facilities, the backup water supply is only sufficient for one day while the City of Johannesburg is unable to refill it promptly.

However, it notes that the situation is not isolated to the building and appears to affect the entire Hillbrow area. As a result, the Court has been unable to conduct physical or in-court case hearings.

It adds that the management of the apex court is in communication with the City of Johannesburg and Rand Water and will provide an update to court users when it becomes available.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has briefed the media on water supply challenges and interventions in Johannesburg:
