ConCourt to rule on compensation for ‘Please Call Me’ inventor

The Constitutional Court will today hand down its judgment in the long drawn legal battle between ‘Please Call Me’ inventor Nkosana Makate and telecom giant, Vodacom.

The court will rule whether the Supreme Court of Appeal acted beyond its jurisdiction in setting aside and substituting the High Court’s order for Vodacom to compensate Makate calculated at R47-million.

The case, which has dragged on for over two decades, centres on Makate’s invention of the ‘Please Call Me’ service in November 2000 which allows users to send free call-back requests.

This service has generated billions in revenue for Vodacom; and Makate believes he deserves fair compensation.

Judgment is expected to be delivered at 10:00.
