There are concerns that the shutdown of taxi operations may spread to areas beyond Ekurhuleni.
Earlier, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Gauteng said only parts of Ekurhuleni would be affected.
This follows threats of a shutdown in the province on Thursday after officials from the Transport Department impounded 17 taxis for offences, including unroadworthy vehicles.
The Transport Department says it would not be bullied into discontinuing the restoration of law and order on the province’s roads.
Department spokesperson Lesiba Mpya says, “The MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, commends the work of the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate as it continues to restore law and order on our roads. The MEC has reiterated that the citizens of Gauteng are within their constitutional right to freely choose the public transport of their choice and that anyone who bullies and intimidates residents, motorists and commuters of Gauteng will be met with the full might of the law.”
