Company linked to Ormonde building collapse faces forensic probe

A Bryanston based property developer company, New Order Investments, that was allegedly involved in the recent building collapse in Ormonde, allegedly owes the City of Johannesburg R19.5 million in electricity and rates arrears.

A two-storey building under construction at the Sixth Amethyst Business Park in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, partially collapsed last month.

The collapse led to the deaths of nine construction workers.

Three others were injured.

City Manager Floyd Brink says, “The same company where that building collapsed about a month or so ago, where nine people died, we can confirm that he’s got more than one property in the area. So, this particular operation is at the Lakewood Hotel. We can confirm that, at this particular point, we cannot trace the building plans, which give us problems with regards to the building control and our building regulations. At the same time, we can also indicate to you that the level of non-compliance is high, we don’t have a clear water meter for this particular property, and it does seem that the water source for this property is tapping into another property which also belongs to them.”

Brink says the city will conduct a forensic investigation which will take about two weeks.

“There are also issues of outstanding electricity for the building here as well to the tune of around R8,5 million and also encroachment into government land on the pavement area. So, we will be taking a decision to close off the building for today. The level of lawlessness for this company has now brought me to a point where we’re going to do a clear forensic investigation on the company, and we will be decisive on our approach because we do assume that they might be working with some of our officials also from the inside. The company’s name is New Order Investments. We believe that based on our records, it’s more than 28 buildings or properties in this particular area.”
