Taxi rank in Western Cape
Scores of commuters from Nomzamo in Strand outside Cape Town have been left stranded following tensions between two taxi associations over a route.
Four people believed to be affiliated with the taxi organisation Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) were gunned down last Friday at the Mfuleni taxi rank.
Three others were wounded, including a commuter.
Over the weekend, a man was shot and killed and a child was wounded in a suspected taxi-related incident in Lwandle.
The City of Cape Town says the recent taxi-related shootings emanate from a disputed route between Mfuleni, Strand and Somerset West, with CODETA being the licenced route holders.
The taxi rank at Somerset West has since been closed.
This commuter says she has been severely affected, “It affected me very badly because yesterday I had to go to Gordon’s Bay and I had to walk from Nomzamo to here because the Ubers were very scarce. When we were here, we requested [Uber] but it took a while for them to come.”
