Committee satisfied with work done on proposed SABC funding: Diko

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies Khusela Diko has expressed satisfaction on the work done to develop the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) funding model.

Communications Minister Solly Malatsi and private company BMIT Knowledge Group Pyt Ltd updated the portfolio committee on progress made in developing a funding model for the public broadcaster.

Diko also requested time frames for the finalisation of the funding model.

“The work that is being done towards the funding model is a huge step. We also look forward to the finalisation of the SABC Bill because as we all know this funding model is not going to exist in the legislative lacuna. We are looking forward to the minister also giving the sense of timelines on when they will be ready to start engagements on how the funding model is going to be incorporated into legislation.”

During his presentation, Malatsi described the SABC funding model as having two parts; one dealing with the methodology, while the other looks at commercially sensitive information.

Malatsi told the committee that the funding model cannot be finalised without the inputs of Members of Parliament.

The minister requested to present some parts of the proposed model in a closed meeting based on commercial sensitivity.

The department also says that National Treasury has been approached in the process of developing the new funding model.
