Committee probing Mkhwanazi’s allegations intends to meet deadline

The Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee, established to investigate allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, insists their intention is to meet Parliament’s October 31 deadline to submit a report despite the delays.

Molapi Soviet Lekganyane says the Committee stands by its resolution to have Mkhwanazi as its first witness.

Mkhwanazi is only available for the Committee from the 22nd of this month, after his appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Lekganyane admits that the time it took them to formulate terms of reference contributed to their failure to secure Mkhwanazi’s immediate availability.

“Remember, in our case, we spend about two or three meetings where we were discussing the terms of reference and at that time it was not going to be possible for us to initiate contact with the witnesses before the terms of reference were adopted by the committee because the term of reference is that basic document that guides the committee with its work,” says Lekganyane.

H says Mkhwanazi will be subpoenaed should he refuse to appear before the ad hoc committee.
