South African R200 notes
The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers has recommended a 4.1 percent salary increase for public office bearers for the 2025/2026 financial year.
This is contained in the government gazette that was published this week. The proposed salary increases, if approved, could see the President earning R137 000 more a year, bringing his salary to R3.4 million annually.
The Deputy President could get an annual increase of just under R130 000 a year, bringing his salary to R3.1 million a year.
Cabinet Ministers could see a salary hike of R110 000, bringing their annual salary to R2.8 million.
ActionSA, which has brought a Private Members’ Bill to do away with Deputy Ministers, says the proposed salary hikes are outrageous.
ActionSA MP Alan Beesley says, “In an environment where public office bearers are delivering very little that they are meant to serve and with 50% of families in our country going to bed hungry over this festive period, this increase is unacceptable, inappropriate and certainly not deserved. What is a huge slap in the face for South Africans is now Deputy Ministers will now earn over R2.3 million per annum. Nobody knows what deputy ministers do including themselves.”
