The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard how Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officials together with a civilian allegedly stole precious stones that were valued at R14 million.
Images shown at the Commission have displayed Aiden McKenzie and Kersha Lee Stols from the EMPD and Etienne van Der Walt, an ordinary civilian at the residential premises of the complainant.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) assistant director Thulani Magagula told the Commission that the officers and civilian operated outside their jurisdiction, and case of corruption and impersonating a police officer was opened.
“The members stated that they seized the articles and handed them to JMPD officers. Once again, there is no proof that they booked any articles from the operation on the SAPs-13 register. Indeed, they could not, as there is no case registered by [with] SAPS of such an investigation. It is proven that they abused their powers by operating outside their jurisdiction, i.e. Ekurhuleni.”
