Commission adjourns after Madlanga, Carrim’s lawyer heated exchange

There’s been a heated exchange between Chairperson of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga and North West businessman Suliman Carrim’s legal team.

This was after Carrim’s legal team suggested that Justice Madlanga had prejudged the application that it was bringing forward.

The lawyers asked for a postponement to review some documents they felt had relevance to the line of questioning.

The evidence leader suggested a 45-minute break, but Carrim’s lawyers dismissed the suggestion.

Justice Madlanga asked how much time they would need, but the response implied that he had already made a judgment on the matter.

Justice Madlanga: “I take very strong exception to that attitude. In fact, I find it unprofessional for you to say that I have prejudged issues purely because I’m engaging you. I take strong exception to that.”

Adv Rafik Bhana SC: “I don’t think that you should take exception. What you put to me was that you weren’t going to allow an opportunity for the postponement application.”

Justice Madlanga: “I did not, I did not say I am not, I never said so, we can play back the tape. We can play back the recording.”

Adv Rafik Bhana SC: “Then I was mistaken.”

Justice Madlanga: “I can actually, to be rough, I can say you are lying.”
