The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for some parts of the country. It says the extreme weather conditions will start this weekend and continue into next week.
Strong winds are forecast in KwaZulu-Natal with temperatures in Gauteng remaining low with cloudy conditions.
The western mountainous areas of KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern part of the Eastern Cape, towards Lesotho, could experience heavy snowfall on Monday.
Forecaster Letlhogonolo Thobela says, “We would expect some strong winds, cold air as well as the possibility of severe rain or severe thunderstorms, depending on the area and how the atmosphere reacts.”
Thobela adds: “So we also have a cold front that lands on Saturday in the Western Cape as the cold front moves further east, behind the cold front there’s cold air and the cut off air is also cold and is expected into the central part into the weekend, so it’s coming just behind the cold front, that’s why you see a drop in temperatures especially over the central part, into most parts of the southern areas of the country. We won’t have any precipitation, but it will be cold over most parts of Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Mpumalanga.”
