COJ, SERI in court over the metro’s removal of informal traders

The City of Johannesburg and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) are set to face off at the Johannesburg high court this morning, over the metro’s removal of informal traders in certain parts of the city.

In recent months, the City implemented a programme to remove traders operating without authorisation, as part of reclaiming back the City and invoking bylaws.

However, SERI believes that the clean-up programme violates the rights of the traders.

The city argues that mushrooming of informal traders has contributed to the untidiness of the CBD. According to the city, unauthorised informal trading had jeopardised safety, cleanliness and access to emergency routes in Johannesburg’s CBD.
