Minister of Cogta, Velenkosini Hlabisa encourages young women to join local government.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has called for more visibility of young women in the local government space.
Hlabisa was speaking at the dialogue on the White Paper Review on Local Government (WPLG) at Birchwood Conference Centre, Ekurhuleni, today.
The White Paper Review was launched in May this year by the minister of Cogta to emphasise the need for local government to adapt to a changing world.
Today’s dialogue afforded an opportunity for women and the youth to contribute to local government transformation.

Hlabisa says that the country needs more young females leaders in high-ranking positions.
“If you talk to women, you talk to people who support families. People who are the majority, and people who have been previously disadvantaged. I throw a challenge that we want to see more young females, not only belonging to the executives or being deputy mayors, but we also want to see them taking leadership as mayors of council, as speakers of council, while they are still youth.”
The dialogue process will conclude on Thursday, 31 July 2024.
