Traffic officer inspects a taxi
Mpumalanga Public Works, Roads and Transport MEC Thulasizwe Thomo says close to 1 000 vehicles have been impounded in the province due to violations of different traffic laws.
Thomo was part of a roadblock operation on the N4 toll road near Mbombela.
Thomo has urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules following a fatal crash on the N2 near Piet Retief.
“Since we have started this operation from the Easter weekend on the 1st of April, we have impounded close to 9 20 vehicles for different, of course, violations of the law. So, we are hopeful that we are doing well because if you look at the numbers of fatalities, except the one that has occurred today in Piet Retief. We were sitting at around seven fatalities. So, now it has escalated roughly to 11, if not 10. But we’re still waiting for a proper verification report from the South African Police Service and EMS. So, I think we’re doing fairly well this year as Mpumalanga as compared to the previous years.”
