Men sift through the rubble after floods in KZN.
Aid organisation, Red Cross, in KwaZulu Natal says climate change could be part of the one of reasons for the frequent flooding incidents in the province.
This follows the recent floods and mudslides that left 11 people dead and scores displaced.
Red Cross has been working in collaboration with the province’s Human Settlements Department to feed and accommodate people affected by the recent inclement weather.
“It’s quite worrying, as we are seeing the frequency of the incidents that are happening, as well as the fatalities and there are vulnerable areas that are always affected by these incidents. But lately, what we are learning is that there’s been conversations about issues of climate change playing a role in the frequency, as well as how the weather is actually behaving lately. So, we have learned also that it’s not only the informal settlements, because usually it was always the informal settlements that are always affected, but lately even well planned, and well-structured areas are also very much affected,” Red Cross Spokesperson in KZN, Siyabonga Hlatshwayo.
