Clairwood residents picket against logistics park rezoning

1 minute

Residents and activists from Clairwood south of Durban will today picket outside the eThekwini Municipality’s Town Planning Offices to object to the City’s proposition to rezone the area and create a logistics park.

This comes as the Municipality continues with the 2014 resolution for the Local Area Plan, which seeks to turn the once residential area, into an industrial hub.

The move has sparked criticism as many claim Clairwood is a historic residential area.

But the Municipality contends that 95% of the people who own land in Clairwood don’t actually live there.

Ravin Brijlal from the Clairwood Ratepayers and Residents Association says the city plans to remove some historic and religious sites that are significant to the history of Clairwood.

“It is an important day for us because our court hearing has come, so this new picket we are doing is because the council wants to rezone Clairwood, so are we putting our objections for this rezoning for Clairwood? It wasn’t told to us in full details what’s going to happen. The community has decided to do a picket in the office on town planning at Old Fort Durban,” says Brijlal.
