City Power suspends services in Alexandra

2 minutes

City Power in Johannesburg says it has suspended its services in Alexandra Township until further notice.

The power utility says it will not respond to any outage calls because some community members attacked workers on Tuesday. It has since opened a case with police.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says they will only resume their services in the township when the safety of their workers and infrastructure is guaranteed.

“We have decided to suspend our operations in Alexander following the attack on our technicians at Alexander Service Delivery Centre. A group of people who were basically complaining about electricity outages in the township basically stormed our service delivery centre and attacked the operators and technicians that have just clocked in to take over the night shift so that they can assist the residents.”

City Power infrastructure and vehicles were damaged during the attack. They are providing psychosocial support to Alexandra staff members affected by this incident.
