City Power implements measures to protect employees after robberies

Johannesburg City Power says it has implemented measures aimed at protecting its employees.

This is after armed men robbed two of its security officers of their belongings at the Alexandra substation last week Friday.

The power utility says five armed suspects broke into the substation.

The incident comes amid growing challenges that the power utility is facing including vandalism to its infrastructure.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the attacks on their staff have a negative impact on their operations.

“There are certain areas in Johannesburg where we have cut off deploying teams to go and fix and restore electricity at night because of these kinds of instances. So, our teams once they go in, they get robbed, they get harassed and so forth. So, we ended up saying these areas are no go zones. Areas like Alexandra in particular, areas in the inner city, Jeppestown, areas in Lenasia’s side and Soweto. And that means that if there is a power outage from six o’clock or seven o’clock, you will only be attended to the following morning.”
