Johannesburg City Power says it’s working on resolving a R1 billion backlog it owes contractors. The payment dispute has led to disruptions to City Power operations as contractors staged a protest to demand payments.
In a statement released by City Power, Isaac Mangena confirms that they have a backlog that is sitting at over 160 days.
“City power acknowledges that approximately R1.2 billion is currently owed to contractors. A payment allocation of R56 million has been committed by the City and is scheduled for release between 15 and 16 October 2025 as part of the ongoing effort to reduce the backlog. In addition, a comprehensive review of all outstanding invoices is underway, prioritising older payments first and expediting verification processes to eliminate administrative bottlenecks,” explains Mangena.
