City of Joburg launches state of the art fire station

The official opening of the newly built fire station in the Johannesburg CBD has been described as a significant step towards improved public safety and faster emergency response times.

With the city’s population rapidly increasing, authorities believe there is a growing need for innovative and efficient service delivery to meet the rising demand for emergency response.

The old Central Fire Station, one of the first fire stations built in the early 1900s, ceased operations in 2019 due to high maintenance costs.

Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Xoli Khumalo says the station is staffed with highly trained firefighters.

“The new facility restores a critical service at the heart of the city, staffed by highly trained firefighters working on shift rotation. It’s equipped to provide swift coordinated and reliable responses.”

Speaking at the launch, Johannesburg Development Agency CEO Themba Mathibe said the fire station is a flagship development that is built to the highest standards to ensure that the EMS team has the best possible resources.
