Samwu members protest in the Johannesburg CBD on December 12, 2024.
Several City of Johannesburg employees affiliated to the South African Municipal Worker’s Union (Samwu) have been injured after the police fired rubber bullets at protesting workers.
Samwu members had barricaded several roads in the Braamfontein area yesterday afternoon, causing traffic disruptions that affected various routes including the M1 Highway.
They were demanding a meeting with the city’s Mayor, Dada Morero, over a wage increase demand.
Samwu Deputy Regional Chairperson Lebogang Ndawo says, “They decided to call SAPS who shot at protesters who were not provoking them.”
Ndawo says councillors have given themselves salary increases while overlooking the employees who are struggling to make ends meet.
“They decided to give themselves an increase of 83 000 per year, but they are constantly telling workers that you are getting paid at category eight, there’s no money to put you to category 10.”
Samwu says they will not stop protesting until their demands are met.
