City of Ekurhuleni vows to dismantle illegal mining operations

The Community Safety Department in the City of Ekurhuleni has vowed to dismantle illegal mining operations in the area.

This follows the arrest of a 23 undocumented Malawian nationals at the Weltevreden Landfill Site in Brakpan.

The site was shutdown last December after the community raised safety concerns.

City of Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee on Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku says they have arrested a number of zama zamas at disused mines since the start of their operations.

“We are not going to stop. It is going to be ongoing, our aim is to enforce law.  Its sad because this country has got a constitution, it has got laws that are in place – that is why as law enforcement, we are committed.”
