CIAG seeks US support for Western Cape sovereignty bid

2 minutes

The Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) is taking its quest for a sovereign Western Cape to the global stage by seeking support from the United States.

The group says that it has notified President Cyril Ramaphosa, the International Relations Minister, and the Western Cape Premier, of its plans to send a delegation to the US next month.

It says the aim of the visit is to seek financial backing and diplomatic endorsement for its campaign. This comes as relations between South Africa and the US, are at an all-time low – with South Africa’s ambassador to the US recently declared persona non-grata and booted out of the US.

CIAG spokesperson Dr Joan Swart says, “The opportunity presented itself since the new administration came into power. So, the US has always seen themselves and been kind of the vanguard of democracy in the world- and they renewed that sense of protection of democracies worldwide and protection of minorities as well. So, that’s why we thought it is a very good opportunity to approach them specifically. Throughout the years we’ve been speaking to other parties worldwide as well, but this is a unique opportunity that presented itself.”
