Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane says bullying, gangsterism, physical fights and substance abuse are having a negative impact on learning and teaching in many schools in Ekurhuleni on Gauteng’s East Rand.
He says they’ve identified about 55 schools in the region where some of these incidents takes place.
Chiloane was addressing a School Safety Imbizo in Tsakane on the East Rand today.

He’s appealed to stakeholders present to give constructive criticism but also solutions on how to improve safety in schools.
“Bullying is a serious matter. Many don’t recover from bullying. It affects our children. There was also an issue happening in this area, Gauteng East, suicide, learner suicide. It’s a serious matter. We can’t have a society where children are taking their lives.”
