Children can’t be taught on empty stomachs: Gwarube

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says school nutrition programmes are essential for learning as hungry children struggle to concentrate and stay in school.

Speaking in the North West on the first day of the 2026 academic year, Gwarube said that R10 billion has been allocated to the nutrition programme.

She says that this is expected to make a meaningful difference to learner attendance and performance.

“You can never ever teach a hungry child. That’s why this investment of R10 billion is one that we will protect (learners) and we really want to make sure that hopefully, we will get to a place where we can serve two meals a day to children because ultimately, that’s how the small ones are going to be able to learn. And so, this investment is incredibly important and I’m really pleased with the North West.”
