Kaizer Chiefs have not qualified for the MTN8 competition for a second successive season. The Amakhosi played to a goalless draw with Polokwane City in their final Betway Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The draw saw Chiefs finish their campaign in ninth place on the standings, while Polokwane City finished in seventh place.
Stellenbosch F.C. will compete in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup after finishing third in the standings following a goalless draw with Cape Town City.
Chiefs wanted to win and avoid the embarrassment of missing out on the MTN8 for a second successive season. Polokwane City, on the other hand, needed a victory to cement their place in the top eight.
The Amakhosi launched an attack as they looked to score an opening goal of the match. Tashriq Morris’ tame effort went wide on the occasion. They had another scoring chance moments later.
Keeper Brian Okoth stopped Morris’ header from close range after Dillon Solomons’ effort had rebounded off the upright.
The visitors had a scoring chance at the other end after some great work by Mokibelo Ramabu on the right flank. But Bonginkosi Dlamini failed to convert.
The match was still goalless at half-time. The two sides failed to find the back of the net in the second half also, with the match ending goalless.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu have shared the spoils after playing to a goalless draw in Durban. Pirates were assured a second-place finish and didn’t need the points like Amazulu, who were in sixth and needed a victory to secure a top-eight finish. After a goalless first half, it was the home side that opened the scoring.
Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi’s own goal gave the home side the lead. However, Pirates were not prepared to die without a fight.
Midfielder Simphiwe Selepe scored late in the match to level matters for the Buccaneers.
