As the curtains drew on Women’s Day celebrations yesterday, Chief Justice Mandisa Maya announced a landmark sexual harassment policy for the judiciary.
The policy, which is described as a historic step in safeguarding the integrity of the courts and protecting the dignity of all who serve within them, comes at a time when a probe is underway into the first formal complaint of alleged sexual harassment against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge.
Chief Justice Maya, who says that this policy is a necessary and urgent intervention, has directed all members of the Judiciary to urgently familiarise themselves with the policy and ensure adherence.
In a statement, the Office of the Chief Justice says the policy sends a clear message that sexual harassment has no place in the halls of justice.
