Chaskalson concerned about Madlanga Inquiry witnesses ill health, postponements

The Madlanga Commission has raised concerns over the recurring number of witnesses who cannot appear before the Inquiry due to ill health.

A crime intelligence officer who was set to take the stand brought an application to the Commission for a postponement on Wednesday due to ill health.

The Commission was compelled to stand down until  Thursday morning so that the witness could produce a more appropriate sick note.

Evidence leader Adv. Matthew Chaskalson has disqualified the sick note presented by the crime intelligence officer, describing it as ineligible.

He further raised concerns about the number of witnesses who are falling sick when they are meant to present themselves to the Commission.

The Crime Intelligence officer who handles informants is not the only witness who has fallen ill and subsequently had to postpone their testimony.

Witness F, who has implicated General Shadrack Sibiya in acts of corruption, was also hospitalised due to ill health.

This prompted the Commission to postpone his testimony until next month.
