Power entity Centlec has switched off the lights of some government entities in the Free State for defaulting on payment arrangements of about R1.3 billion.
The Provincial department of Public Works Head of Department, Mosa Masimene says there’s been constant communication with Centlec and they’ve been paying whatever amount they have in their coffers.
He adds that they are waiting to see the adjusted budget on how to deal with historic debt.
“This financial year alone we have budgeted around R402 million and to date, we have paid R296 million. Now that’s the best that we can do unfortunately and as I’ve indicated these are municipal services for the entire Free State, including Centlec so that’s basically where we are. On January 28, we did write to Centlec indicating that we paid them R87 million.”
