Traffic authorities have called on motorists driving on the N3 between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to be cautious.

This as soccer lovers make their way to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban for the Nedbank Cup soccer final between the Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates today.

Gauteng Traffic Police’s Obed Sibasa says there will be zero tolerance for contravening the law, including drunken driving.

“More traffic anticipated ahead of the Soweto derby, Nedbank Cup. We urge motorists and other road users to look out for too excited soccer fans on motorways. We have measures in place for unruly drivers. Abuse of alcohol is a no-no, especially for drivers. Speeding is also against the law. Comply and be safe. Let’s all arrive alive.”

Meanwhile, members of the SAPS and the eThekwini metro police are out in full force to patrol around the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban to ensure that today’s Nedbank Cup is incident-free.

This after some soccer fans resorted to social media platforms to threaten to disrupt the event because of chaos in the ticket sales.

Members of the police’s public order policing unit have been deployed with a water cannon and armoured cars.

Metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu says they have doubled the number of deployed officers. “Although I’m not able to disclose the numbers, I can assure you we have enough police on the ground – metro police and police. I assure you those who attempt that will not survive.”
