Cape Winelands fires fully contained

The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) in the Western Cape says its Fire Services teams have reported that they have contained the five major fires which started a few days ago.

Firefighters in the region had to battle stubborn fires at various sites last week.

Municipal spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto says the wind eased overnight in Ida’s Valley in Stellenbosch, allowing teams to make progress.

“With the wind easing overnight, teams made excellent progress and the fire line is fully contained. A few warm areas still require mopping up and a ground crew will remain on site throughout the day. In De Doorns, we’re very relieved to say that this fire’s been fully contained. However, there are still a few smouldering hotspots which remain and will be closely monitored throughout the day,” says Otto.

She says that in Bo-Swaarmoed, Lakensvlei and Nollie’s Kloof, there are no flare-ups reported.
