Cape Town to approve new housing plan near District Six

Cape Town City Council is set to vote and approve the final release of a new social housing plot allocated on the edge of District Six and the CBD today.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the housing project is expected to accommodate 237 families, an increase from the initial 180 units.

“This is a property of 3300m2. It is just a block away from MyCiti bus stations in Buitenkant and Roeland Streets. The property is close to schools; it is mere blocks away from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and you have the entire city centre with all its economic opportunities right on your doorstep. This is the kind of address that can change people’s lives and open up entire new avenues of opportunity for them. And by guaranteeing a large number of subsidised social housing units as part of the development, we can make sure this prime property serves Capetonians well.”
