Hundreds of people have been left homeless following several shack fires which swept through a number of areas across Cape Town in the Western Cape.
Nearly 50 structures were destroyed in Overcome Heights, near Muizenberg, in the Southern Peninsula, leaving around 150 people homeless.
Another 80 wood and iron structures were gutted in a separate fire in Khayelitsha, leaving hundreds homeless.
Spokesperson for humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, Ali Sablay says they will be deploying teams to affected areas to provide humanitarian relief.
“Gift of the Givers Teams are on the ground and will be doing assessments once the site has been cleared to do fire assessments by the Fire Department. Gift of the Givers has activated teams to assist at all three fire sites and will be doing a full-scale operation once the fire Department has declared the sites safe,” says Sablay.
