Cape Town sees visitor surge as govt, aviation efforts pay off

The City of Cape Town says the increased visitor numbers in the city are a strong indicator that co-ordinated efforts between government and the aviation industry are delivering improved results.

The Cape Town International Airport has seen a surge of 11 million visitor numbers of two-way passengers through the airport for the first time.

More than 3 million of these travellers were international passengers.

Mayco Member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says, “It’s clear that aviation is driving our tourism economy and even clearer that our smart campaigns, backed by conversion, airline partnerships, city-to-city agreements and a focused air access strategy, are working. Tourism now employs 106 000 Capetonians and I’m determined to see that number grow. More flights mean more economic growth for our local economy.”

The V&A Waterfront says they have recorded nearly 3 million visitors during the December festive season.

The V&A Waterfront spokesperson, Donald Kau, says, “We’ve had a very positive festive period. The majority of our visitors would come from up country, so local tourism over December really dominates in the V&A Waterfront. But as you would have seen with the ACSA numbers we’ve got a lot of international tourists that come in and at the waterfront. A key part of that is also the cruises and that’s been growing, so we’re very happy with the performance from a tourism perspective. Over 3 million visitors coming into the waterfront. New Year’s Eve is typically a highlight for everybody who is in Cape Town, and we would see close to about 300 000 people come into the waterfront for New Year’s Eve to take up space and enjoy the concert.”
