Cape Town says no decision on removal of Christian symbols from festive lights

The City of Cape Town says no decision has been taken to remove Christian or religious symbols from the Festive Lights on Adderley Street.

This follows concerns raised by the African Christian Democratic Party.

The City says symbols like angels, the Mother Mary and the baby Jesus remain part of this year’s display.

It says the Festive Lights have been held for more than 50 years and are designed around an annual theme, with recent themes looking at hope.

The City says the display reflects the diversity of people in Cape Town.
