Cape Town gang violence highlights Mkhwanazi’s allegations

The Institute for Security Studies says deadly gang violence that broke out in the Western Cape this past week highlights the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi‘s allegations. Cape Town has seen another wave of shooting incidents in which several people have been killed.

Mkhwanazi is set to appear before Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to testify, on Wednesday. This follows his allegations of corruption among South African Police Service (SAPS) brass.

Mkhwanazi has accused them of protecting politicians and controversial businessmen linked to drug cartels. The institute’s Senior Training Co-ordinator. Willem Els says custodians of the law must account for all their alleged crimes.

“South Africa has got a problem with the spike in violent crimes. It seems that criminality has taken over, and it seems that the response is not what it’s supposed to be in order to curb these resurgence in violent crimes. We have to look at who’s responsible in order to curb it. We have to look at what the role of the minister is, the political oversight is, but also at the operational level, because we need accountability,” says Els.
