Cape Town fire victims appeal for assistance with school uniform

Residents of an informal settlement in Nomzamo in Strand, outside Cape Town, are appealing for school uniform for the children in the area following a devastating church fire on Christmas Eve which claimed the life of one person.

The residents are busy rebuilding their homes after receiving building material from government authorities.

Meanwhile, residents of the J Section informal settlement in Kayamandi in Stellenbosch (in the Boland) are still busy clearing charred debris following a shack fire on New Year’s Eve which gutted more than 20 structures.

More than 2,000 people have been displaced in Cape Town over the past two weeks due to shack fires.

Melikhaya Jafta, a community leader in Nomzamo informal settlement, says, “We did receive the material for the people living in informal settlements, then we did go on Monday there to the stadium. Everything went well, but a lot of children don’t have anything. They need a uniform, if we can get help with that it would be fair.”
