Handcuffs hung on prison bars.
A 63-year-old man has started to serve his life term after the Mitchells Plain Regional Court on the Cape Flats sentenced him yesterday.
He pleaded guilty to the rape of his then 13-year-old granddaughter.
National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the man was out on parole for raping his daughter a few years earlier.
He says the daughter, who is now 19, had testified against her father in 2018.
Ntabazalila says the court found the man unfit to possess a firearm, work with children, and placed his name on the National Register for Sex Offenders.
GBV report findings
Gender-based violence remains a profound and widespread problem that affects almost every aspect of life in South Africa, according to a study by the Human Sciences Research Council, published last month.
The first-ever Gender-Based Violence Study in South Africa shows that almost 40% of women in the country experience physical and sexual violence in their lives.
The country has some of the highest rates of gender-based violence, including rape, femicide and domestic abuse.
Emotional, economic, and controlling behaviours were also prevalent, with younger and Black African women disproportionately affected.
The findings also show that intimate partner violence was a significant issue, while women from age 15 were affected by violence perpetrated by family members.
The study is calling for a comprehensive national action plan.
