Calls for decisive action against rape at educational institutions

1 minute

There are growing calls for the Education and Social Development departments to act decisively against rape at educational institutions in the country.

The latest crime statistics show that 190 cases of rape were reported at educational institutions, including at day-care centres and special schools, between July and September this year.

Most of the incidents took place at primary and high schools.

Foundation for Education and Social Justice Africa founder Hendrick Makaneta says, “I think it’s just a matter of teachers who do not understand their role in society because every teacher who goes through training at university is taught about the principle of in loco parentis. It is a Latin term that means that in the absence of the parents at school, the teacher automatically becomes the parent. Therefore, teachers have got a duty to look after the general well-being of all our learners and to protect our learners.
