CAF acts to prevent repeat of 2026 final fiasco

The Confederation of African Football will implement changes and improvements to its statutes and regulations to prevent a recurrence of the 2026 African Cup of Nations final fiasco.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe says the improvements are also aimed at restoring and strengthening the trust and confidence in the CAF referees, Video Assistant Refereeing operators, and judicial bodies.

Motsepe was addressing the media following a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt, today.

African football is still coming to terms with the fiasco, which saw Senegal eventually stripped of the title and handed to hosts Morocco, after their football federation appealed to CAF’s Appeal Board following Senegal’s walk-off in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in the match.
