Buthelezi welcomes declaration of KZN as National State of Disaster

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has welcomed the declaration of a National State of Disaster in the province.

Twenty-two people have died this year after severe weather that caused 3.1 billion rand in damages.

COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the declaration will enable the province to access necessary resources to rebuild communities.

“This declaration, promulgated in terms of Section 23(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002, represents a critical intervention to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive response to the devastating consequences of the recent disruptive rainfall, thunderstorms, floods, and powerful winds. The MEC for COGTA has assured the people of KwaZulu-Natal that the department will work diligently with the NDMC, municipalities, and all pertinent stakeholders to ensure the efficient coordination of response and recovery efforts.”
