Heavy rains at Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast have damaged roads, infrastructure and businesses.

This has led to extensive damage to some homes in the eThekwini metro as well.

In Port Shepstone, several business owners are clearing their premises of stock to properly clean and assess the impact of the damage to their stores.

Petrol stations in the area have also been flooded.

Shop owner Mohammed Abu-Sayed says he estimates that half a million rand worth of his stock has been damaged.

“I don’t know how I can say. Last night was happen big heavy rain. So now I see small what I came to front of shop. Now I think I try to close the shop. In the meantime, was come the big, heavy water from opposite the road. Everywhere is the flat, blocks, no way to pass the water. So I don’t know what happened there. I’m very shocked.”

Meanwhile, 80-year-old Port Shepstone resident, Barry Vantone, says the damage to businesses has affected the entire community.

“Some people fix up cell phones, other people do this, they supply you with that . . . bread, milk, those sort of things. And when anybody’s business is affected it affects the community as a whole. Everybody is affected. Because it’s like throwing a stone in the water, the ripples spread out like that. Bad things happen, it goes down. That’s what makes me so heart sore when I see and hear of bad things happening. How can I help? That’s my first thought: how can I help?,” says Vantone.
