Bus driver in R21 fatal accident discharged from hospital

Ekurhuleni Roads and Transport MMC Andile Mngwevu says the driver of the bus that overturned on the R21 road killing 13 people has been discharged from hospital. Some of the survivors allege that the driver was speeding when the crash happened.

Preliminary investigations suggest that he lost control of the bus while trying to swerve to avoid crashing onto a vehicle in front the bus.

Mngwevu says, “I just got informed now that the driver has since been discharged. So, we will also use our internal processes and also expect the team of investigators that are dedicated from the RTMC and the police to also do their to also do their role so that we get a full comprehensive statement of what transpired. The driver is also a human being. He was involved in an accident. It is also human for us to allow him the opportunity to undergo this difficult process.”

During a media briefing by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi today, the death toll was revised from the initial 16 to 13 fatalities.

Preliminary investigations showed that the bus driver in the fatal bus crash on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport, had swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle before he lost control and overturned.
