‘Bullying victims suffer more from lack of protective laws’

1 minute

The lack of official anti-bullying laws to protect victims in the country contributes to the ongoing torment they face. That’s according to Daniel Rudy Chettiar, founder of anti-bullying organization, DSK Group.

He was speaking after a north Durban high school girl was captured on video being bullied by a peer. The girl subsequently attempted suicide.

In a separate incident – another high school girl was seen visually traumatized and unresponsive at her home allegedly due to bullying.

Chettiar says victims require urgent protection by government.

“We had a change in legislation for other things, for gender-based violence, we have got to change. We’ve got sexual acts, we’ve got the bail section, but nothing of all the amendments for the 5th of August, nothing came for bullying, and if you look at some of the schools, the SGBs and principals, they cant do nothing because they are getting threatened by the same bullies.”
