Former SAA Board member Yakhe Kwinana appears at the East London Magistrates Court in the Eastern Cape on 26 March 2025.
The Buffalo City Metro in the Eastern Cape has expressed its intention of purchasing land which is allegedly owned by former SAA Board member Yakhe Kwinana.
The land in question is situated on the western side of East London.
Currently, Kwinana is facing multiple charges of extortion, malicious damages to property and pointing a firearm.
She intends to plead not guilty to the charges.
Her bail hearing is being heard in the East London Magistrate’s Court.
Spokesperson for the Metro, Samkelo Ngwenya, says they are trying by all means to ensure the dispute over the debacle is resolved.
“The matter was tabled before council in a report in December 2024 and council resolved to intervene by purchasing the land. This necessitated negotiations between the purchaser and the municipality which reached an agreement to proceed with the sale. Currently, the deed of the sale, which is a fundamental legal document that formalises the transfer of ownership of a property from one party to another, has been drawn up and we are processing compensation. It is important to note that the municipality can only lawfully invest in the land once the transfer has been finalised and a purchase agreement is in place. The metro is also commencing with the screening process of all the people residing in this area.”
