Bucs advance to next round of CAF Champions League

Orlando Pirates have advanced to the next round of this season’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

Pirates beat Lesotho’s Lioli F.C. 4-0 in the second leg of the first preliminary round at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bucs have advanced with a 7-nil aggregate score, after winning 3-nil in the first leg in Bloemfontein a week ago.

After winning the first leg encounter away from home, Orlando Pirates made six changes to the team that beat Siwelele F.C. midweek.

Regular starters Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Deon Hotto, and Patrick Maswanganyi all started on the bench. New signing Tshepang Moremi broke the deadlock from another free kick on the stroke of half-time. The red-hot Moremi grabbed his brace three minutes into the second half.

Substitute Yanela Mbuthuma made it 3-nil twelve minutes from time with his first goal for Pirates. Mbuthuma also got his brace a minute later, to make it 4-nil.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs needed penalties to beat Kabuscorp F.C. of Angola 5-4. Amakhosi won Saturday’s game 1-nil, but the game ended 1-all on aggregate after Kabuscorp won with the same scoreline in Luanda a week ago.

Glody Lilepo’s attempt went narrowly wide in the 39th minute, but two minutes later the Congolese forward made amends, giving Chiefs the much-needed lead.

Substitute Flavio da Silva was denied by the keeper in the 63rd minute, in a one-on-one situation.

The game failed to produce more goals, and it had to be decided on penalties. Chiefs scored all their penalties, with their keeper, Brandon Petersen, saving one spot-kick.

The winning penalty was scored by young defender Aiden McCarthy.
